Privacy Policy.
This policy explains what personal information we collect when you visit businessof.co, why we collect it, how we use it, and the choices you have. We have written it in plain English. If anything is unclear, get in touch.
Who we are
The Business of Marketing is a C-suite media platform published at businessof.co. For the purposes of UK and EU data protection law, Business Of, trading as The Business of Marketing, is the data controller for personal information collected through this website and our related services.
Our registered contact for data matters is set out in the final section. If you have a question about this policy or about how we handle your information, that is the address to use.
What we collect
We collect personal information in three ways. When you give it to us directly, when it is collected automatically as you use the site, and when it is shared with us by trusted third parties such as event partners.
Information you give us includes:
- Your name, email address, organisation, and role when you complete a contact form, submit an interview request, or subscribe to our newsletter.
- Messages, suggestions, or enquiries you send us directly.
- Details you share when taking part in an episode or event, including biographical information, job title, employer, photographs, and audio or video recordings.
Information collected automatically includes:
- Standard server logs such as IP address, browser type, device type, and pages visited.
- Anonymised analytics data about how visitors navigate the site.
- Cookie preferences you have set.
Why we collect it
We use personal information for a small number of clearly defined purposes:
- To respond to you. If you contact us, we use your details to reply and to follow up where appropriate.
- To deliver the newsletter and briefings. If you subscribe, we send the intelligence, briefings, and new episode notifications you asked for.
- To produce and publish episodes. If you take part as a guest, we use the information you provide to produce your episode, publish your guest profile, and promote the show.
- To run the platform. We use analytics to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it.
- To meet legal and commercial obligations. We keep records where the law or a legitimate business reason requires it.
We do not sell personal data. We do not use your information for unrelated advertising.
Understanding our audience
When you visit businessof.co, we map the IP address of your visit to the organisation it belongs to. We do this to understand our audience: which businesses use the site and which of our work they read. It keeps us relevant and helps us produce content that is useful to the companies who use the site. It also helps us reach out to organisations our work is relevant to.
This runs on our servers. It sets no cookie and stores nothing on your device, it works at company level, and it does not build profiles of individuals. To turn an IP address into a company, we send it to a third-party IP intelligence service that returns the company name and related business details.
Our lawful basis is legitimate interest. Your rights over personal data, including the right to object, are set out in the Your rights section below.
Our legal bases
Under UK GDPR we are required to tell you the lawful basis for each type of processing. Ours are:
- Consent. For marketing emails, newsletter subscriptions, and non-essential cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- Contract. To fulfil our obligations to guests, partners, and sponsors, and to deliver services you have requested.
- Legitimate interests. To operate and improve the site, secure it against misuse, respond to enquiries, and promote the editorial work of the platform in a way that is proportionate and does not override your rights.
- Legal obligation. To meet tax, accounting, and other regulatory requirements.
Cookies and analytics
Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use a small number of cookies to keep the site working, remember your preferences, and understand how the site is used.
Strictly necessary cookies keep the site functioning. These do not need your consent.
Analytics cookies help us see which pages are read, which episodes are played, and where visitors come from. The data is aggregated. We do not use it to profile individuals.
One of our analytics providers is Microsoft Clarity. With your analytics consent, Clarity sets 2 first-party cookies, _clck and _clsk, and records session replays of clicks, scrolling and navigation so we can see where pages confuse or fail people. Form fields and text you enter are masked by default. We use this only to improve the site and do not use it to identify you. If you withdraw analytics consent, Clarity stops loading on your next visit and we clear those cookies where the browser allows.
You can refuse or delete cookies through your browser settings. If you do, some parts of the site may not work as expected. For full detail see the Cookie Policy.
Third parties
We use a small set of trusted third party services to run the platform. Each one is bound by its own privacy policy and is used only for a specific operational purpose.
- Formspree processes submissions from our contact, newsletter, and interview request forms.
- Amazon Web Services hosts the site and handles traffic securely.
- Podcast platforms such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify distribute episodes. Listener data on those platforms is governed by their own terms.
- LinkedIn hosts our company page and the associated group. Interaction data there is governed by LinkedIn.
- Analytics providers, including Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, process anonymised usage statistics and session replays on our behalf.
We do not pass personal data to these providers beyond what is needed for them to perform the task requested.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as we need to for the purposes set out in this policy, or as long as the law requires.
- Newsletter subscribers are kept on our list until they unsubscribe or ask to be removed.
- Enquiry and contact form records are retained for up to 24 months after the last contact, unless a commercial relationship extends that period.
- Guest profile information and episode materials are kept as part of the public editorial record for as long as the show remains published.
- Accounting and tax records are retained for the periods required by UK law.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have a set of rights over your personal information. You can exercise any of them by contacting us using the details at the bottom of this page. We will respond within one month.
- Right to be informed. Know what we hold and how we use it. This policy is part of how we fulfil that right.
- Right of access. Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Right to rectification. Ask us to correct anything that is wrong or incomplete.
- Right to erasure. Ask us to delete your information where we no longer need it.
- Right to restrict. Ask us to pause processing while a concern is resolved.
- Right to object. Object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Right to portability. Receive your information in a portable, machine-readable format.
- Right to complain. Raise a concern with the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
International transfers
Some of our service providers are based outside the United Kingdom, primarily in the European Economic Area and the United States. Where personal data leaves the UK, it is protected by appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, Standard Contractual Clauses, or adequacy decisions recognised by the UK government.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access. Traffic to businessof.co is encrypted in transit. Access to systems holding personal data is restricted on a need-to-know basis.
No online service can guarantee perfect security. If a breach occurs and is likely to present a risk to your rights, we will notify you and the Information Commissioner's Office in line with our legal obligations.
Children
This site is a platform for senior commercial leaders. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in how we operate or to meet new legal requirements. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of the page. For material changes we will notify you directly where we have an email address on file.
