PJ Pereira
Co-Founder, Silverside AI
Nearly three decades across advertising and branded entertainment, now building an AI creative company and arguing the whole industry must reinvent itself.
About
PJ Pereira is co-founder of Silverside AI, an AI creative company he describes as a lab unbound by legacy. He co-founded the agency Pereira O'Dell and is known for award-winning branded entertainment, and more recently for what the host describes as some of the world's most viewed AI campaigns, including global AI work for Coca-Cola.
Pereira began as a programmer and entered advertising at a time when, he says, programming was not accepted as creative work. He spent decades proving otherwise, co-founding Pereira O'Dell and building a reputation for branded entertainment, including a four-year run of Intel films built on a single simple idea, that it is what is inside that counts. Across the work he has refused the industry's divisions between copywriter, art director and technologist, insisting he is all three at once.
The path to Silverside AI started with a novel. On a flight to Cannes ten years ago, Pereira wrote a script about kung fu versus artificial intelligence, turned it into a book he worked on for eight years, and interviewed ethicists, engineers and brain scientists along the way. When generative AI emerged around GPT-2 he began experimenting to launch the book, saw where it was heading, and built a lab with his partner, naming it Silverside after a small Bay Area fish. The company produced a global Coca-Cola campaign with AI, which drew furious responses at the time, repeated the feat with better technology the following year, and now spans strategy, creative, production, technology and client transformation.

How PJ thinks3 convictions

Repetition and simplicity
Pereira argues the industry has become so obsessed with breaking the rules that it has forgotten the discipline of the craft. A campaign that needs a case study to be understood, he says, will not work in the real world. He points to his Intel work as proof that even ambitious entertainment only earns its place when it carries one simple, repeated idea.

Creativity against the factory
Pereira traces the industry's habit of locking scripts, then storyboards, then each subsequent step, back to an industrial revolution model of specialists and efficiency. He calls applying that logic to creativity insanity. With AI, he says, decisions that once would have got three people fired can now be remade mid-process with no stress.

The scale of AI
For Pereira, AI is not a tool but a generation of technologies underneath every task, and he believes it is a larger change than the internet. Because it is so experiential, he insists you cannot understand it from a report, only by living inside it. That, he says, is why the gap between interns and CEOs has never been smaller.
